Lament Gaa Wakili now no-go-area for farmers despite deployment of Amotekun
Indigenes and residents of Igangan in Ibarapa North Local Council of Oyo State, yesterday, said they hoped the state governor, Seyi Makinde, would make good the promises he made when he visited the area.
Makinde had on Sunday and Monday visited some communities in the area and held stakeholders’ meeting with the people over the incessant clashes involving Fulani herdsmen and farmers.
The governor, who sympathized with the people, promised, among others, to compensate victims of various attacks.
But reacting to the governor’s promises, the residents of Igangan, through the Convener of Igangan Development Advocates (IDA), Mr. Oladiran Oladokun, said they hoped the governor would keep his promises.
He said: “While we are not totally in elation at the governor’s standpoint, we will be fair to him that he wants peace. It is easy to dismiss what is going on as mere exaggeration. Those who have been presented false or pseudo-truth about these insufferable episodes by people, later discovered that they have trivialized the wanton decimation. They were shocked.
“We are a bit relieved he came to sort out the truth from pseudo-truth. We open up our heart with hope, expecting speedy and expedited actions on our demands. Then we can be pleased. Now we are hopeful.
“We hope our hope in Seyi Makinde will not bring shame.”
Oladokun, who hinged his scepticism on the fact that the terrorists still reign supreme despite the deployment of 200 Amotekun operatives to the area, said: “Why are we skeptical? It stems from the fact that, as an example, when Amotekun operatives were deployed, we were relieved. But they were not mobilized. Gaa Wakili (abode of Iskilu Wakili) is now a no-go-area for farmers. Amotekun operatives are ready to quench the fire. But for some reasons, they have been kept back.
“People are opening fire on the people of the state and the governor must deal decisively on the matter. When we got to where the 200 Amotekun operatives are, they just slept on the floor and some were even listening to music. They are in town having fun instead of going into the forest to comb it. We expect them to fish out criminal elements from the forests.”
“That is why we are skeptical about the decisiveness of our government, especially when expedited action is required.”
