Southern governors back collection of VAT by states

Governors from the Southern region of the country who met today September 16 in Enugu, have expressed support for the collection of value-added tax (VAT) by state governments. This was conveyed in a communique read out by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state at the end of the meeting. The Governors who reaffirmed its earlier commitments to fiscal federalism and emphasised the need to pursue its inclusion in the Nigerian Constitution through the ongoing constitutional amendment, stressed that collection of VAT falls within the powers of the state. The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria says it has taken over assets belonging to Oyo North lawmaker, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, over a N600m debt taken by his company, Abadat Ventures Limited. AMCON said in a statement by its Spokesman, Mr. Jude Nwauzor, that Senator Buhari took the loan from Guaranty Trust Bank and refused to offset it despite repeated reminders. The Nigerian Army on Tuesday said that its troops along Mokwa-Jebba road intercepted and arrested a fleeing bandit in a vehicle traveling from the Northern part of the country to Ogbomosho, Oyo State, during a stop-and-search operation. This was contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja by the Directior Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu.
