Oyo govt to commence Eleyele Dam rehabilitation

Aimed at addressing perennial flood risk in Ibadan, reconstruction work on the Eleyele dam is set to commence.

The reconstruction of the Eleyele Dam which is one of the major hydrological devices ravaged by the 2011 flood will see a rehabilitation of the spillway weir; rehabilitation of the spillway channel to Ologuneru Bridge; rehabilitation and raising of the existing embankment by about 1.8 meters; and rehabilitation of the intake tower, scour channel and scour tunnel.

Last week’s hand over of the site by the Oyo state government to Messrs CGC-CHWE JV for the reconstruction work on the dam had in attendance the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Isaac Ishola; Coordinator, Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project (IUFMP), Mr Dayo Ayorinde among others.

The project upon its expected flag off by Governor Abiola Ajimobi is expected to span 24 months.

The reconstruction work of the Eleyele Dam, which was originally built in 1946, is part of the mandate of the Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project (IUFMP) to address all issues pertaining to flooding in Ibadan.
